Values and Beliefs

Below are pictures and descriptions of common life among the Tolowa, a small tribe of Northwest California.

Tolowa Woman

Here you can see traditional wear from the Tolowa tribe. Seashells are common in dresses and jewelry. Common currency of the tribe is dentalia and clothing is often adorned with abalone shells.

Tolowa Territory

The map above shows the ancestral homeland of the Tolowa. Traditionally life would consist of men hunting and fishing, while women gather and prepare meals.

Political Structure

The Tolowa have a longstanding tradition of carrying a Chieftain which is passed from father to son. These chiefs were often figureheads for marriages and were without authority or power in most matters.
